A wedding in a Marrakech riad

The courtyards and rooftops of the medina can be special for smaller celebrations. The layout and local logistics matter more than photographs suggest.

Practical detail

Check the arrival, not just the courtyard

Ask where the car can stop, how far guests will walk and whether suppliers can load equipment nearby. A few minutes through the medina feels very different for elderly relatives or people in formal shoes after midnight. Confirm the route and access arrangements before you pay a deposit.

What makes a riad different?

Traditional riads are inward-facing houses centred around a courtyard. Many offer several rooms and an intimate setting, but their actual seated reception capacity varies greatly. Do not assume that hotel room count and event guest count are identical.

Check access and music arrangements

Some medina lanes are inaccessible to large vehicles. Catering deliveries, instruments and guest transport may require support from the riad. Ask about the permitted late-night hours, rooftop restrictions and any noise limits.

Riad versus exclusive villa

A riad often suits a shorter or smaller event. An estate outside the medina may be better suited to a large wedding with multiple dining areas and dancefloor. Compare fixed hire, catering and accommodation as separate costs.
